Goal 17 - Partnerships For The Goals

Imagination Machines

Big Idea:

To promote a positive outlook that another world is possible by harnessing creativity, sharing ideas and working as a team. Focusing on positives, rather than negatives, through the power of collaboration.
Picture

Type of Activity:

This activity uses drama to explore sustainable development goals through creativity and cooperation.

The activity relies on oral communication, so will need modelling visually and practically to aid participation.

Photographs can be used (with appropriate permissions) to capture evidence of learning.

Who is it for?

All ages.

What do I need?

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Flash Cards/ Posters selected according to group size, previous knowledge, interest and experience of individuals in the group may be helpful to stimulate ideas.

Recommended SDG's to use:  Zero  Hunger, Good Health and Well being, Clean Water and Sanitation, Affordable and Clean Energy, Responsible Consumption and Production,  Life Below Water,  Life on Land.

How long does it take?

45 to 60 minutes.

Introduction

Move freely around the room, in any direction, avoid contact with others. Change direction/pace, etc, on command. Add in one repetitive movement - bend arm, nod, twist hand,  jump, etc, and keep walking.

Focus on idea of machines and vocabulary - can you show me a machine that is digging, lifting, turning, squashing, stretching ... What sound does your machine make?

What machines have you seen today? How do machines help people?

In small groups of 4 to 6 people, challenge them to work together to create familiar machines on the spot, using body parts/shapes to communicate their idea to the rest of  the group, without speaking.

a) a vehicle b) a machine in a house c) a machine in the garden

Participants can guess or ask questions, if necessary, to identify each machine. Discuss and share further examples.

What next

Where did the idea to build machines come from? Explain that teams of people from across the world are working together now to find new ways to help people, wildlife and the planet.
In groups of 4 to 6, invent a machine that can make the world a better place. Give some examples – a machine to make medicine, clean dirty water, grow food more quickly ... Each group to share ideas, rehearse and demonstrate their machine.

Allow each group time to show their "invention" to everyone with  opportunity to answer questions, explain it's purpose and how it works.

How does your machine make the world a better place?

Finally

Revisit SDG symbols and match with the imaginary machines created by each group. Note how SDG's often overlap and that we need everyone to work together to make the world a better place. Reinforce that using imagination, being creative, trying new things, sharing ideas and skills will help overcome problems, however big or small.
