Introducing the Global Goals

Making Changes for the Goals

Big Idea:

The 23 students of class 7aM started an awareness-raising project, in which they examined the 17 Sustainable Development Goals in detail, explained them and worked them out for themselves and their area of life. The idea was to work in teams to explore a goal, in detail, and to devise recommendations that could be followed personally, within school and the wider community - opening up discussions about the purpose of the Sustainable Development Goals and their application in daily life.

Type of Activity:

This is a whole class research project undertaken in small collaborative teams. It resulted in cross-school debates and an exhibition for the wider community.

Who is it for?

Ages 12 to 14.

What do I need?

Stimulus materials to introduce the global goals, SDG icons.
Access to laptops, for research.
Art materials.

How long does it take?

This activity took place for 45 mins x 1 for approximately 3 months.

Introduction

Following introduction of the global goals research challenge, small groups selected goals/groups of goals to explore. In partner, individual and group work, they explored, in detail, how they can implement the goals in their area of life. They worked out practical examples, how and what every human can do personally, at school, in the family and the urban environment.

What next

A poster was prepared for each goal, in which the results and recommended actions were recorded.
These practical results were presented, in turn, to the classes of the school and discussed afterwards. In sometimes heated discussions, the guides tried to convince that the recommended actions to "save the world" were necessary and easy to implement. This was an opportunity to develop active listening and persuasive speaking skills, adapting speech and presentation to the target audience and responding to their questions and ideas.

Finally

The results were then presented to the public as an exhibition. It was made accessible in scheduled student-led guided tours. These took place on parents' consultation day and were promoted to the entire school family. The exhibition has been found a permanent home within the school to reinforce the messages of changes that are required.
